OK, I would suggest you eliminate ALL file section sorts that are chronological... makes no sense for them given it's a CD-ROM! I'd REALLY, REALLY like to see a alphabetical sort of a MASTER files section for the WHOLE disk... I also think that Disk Doubler is as much of a detriment to my purchasing it. If I wanted to standardize my BBS on whatever the CD was available in, I would not be able to do it without the prior purchase of the program. There would be no way to "try it out first". Yes, I have paid the fee on Compact Pro. I use the free unStuffer, so that isn't an issue - but UnStuffIt Deluxe doesn't cover all the possible optimizers available. I also think that you should give the users a format that would be inexpensive to get at their archives. And sysops prefer uploads in "their" format, if you know what I mean. Our first priority is changing over the SI files to DD & then I'll start on the CP stuff. You're definitely entitled to your choices, but I have to second Michael's choice of compression utility. SC=> SC=> Yes, I have paid the fee on Compact Pro. I use the free SC=> unStuffer, so that DD also has a free decompression utility (in fact two). As an added bonus, DD also decompresses .pit & .sit files, so you can use DDExpand to decompress not only .dd files but two other formats as well. That means users don't even have to have extra utilities around to decompress their .sit files, just use DDExpand. This is the way we have it listed on our BBS & have converted our files to DD (& include the decompress utility on each) for the DoM. SC=> I also think that you should give the users a format that would SC=> be inexpensive to get at their archives. How much more inexpensive can you get than FREE. As I mentioned above, DD provides two different version of free expand only utilities. SC=> most users don't have it [DD] This is probably true, but judging by the traffic in the echos asking about the release of 3.7, the number of users is growing very rapidly. With the UG price discounted to $40. that makes it a great deal for most users. I know this may sound like a DD commercial, but our UG has thoroughly tested all three utilities and we don't even recommend SI at all now, and the two choices are DD first with CP second (most space considerations for our BBS & DoM). I don't know how many of our members have CD ROM players, but I do know that most 2400 baud callers have not enough time on my BBS or enough patience to try to explore the CD while connected to the BBS. I think it would be just the ticket to offer MUGs a way to make the whole CD available to people at a reasonable cost. So if I understood your idea correctly, then its a good one. I think that would only confuse the issues more over compression standards for BBS's. With the advent of the DoubleUp board from Sigma for Disk Doubler this has made my 11 line BBS a no brainer. All my files are being converted to the DD format especially since DD know has self extracting capabilities with an overhead equal to CP. (I think 12 bytes?) As a BBS operator I have found that I have very little time to do things that I would like to do and DD frees up a lot of that time. In my year-and-a-half with Omaha Macintosh Users' Group, I have been VERY active in the group. I am the Disk Librarian and operate MacNet Omaha, which will likely eventually become the "official" OMUG BBS. Having been involved to varying degrees in the planning of our monthly meetings, I know the frustration of having the meeting's scheduled presenter cancel at the last minute. The topic for our July 9 meeting was Telecommunications and *I* was to give the presentation. I cancelled. Early the afternoon of the meeting date, it became apparent that my WORK required that I stay late - VERY late, and NOT make it to the OMUG meeting. I called Steve Dunham, our President, at his workplace at about 2:30pm that afternoon and broke the bad news. The cost of my on-line adventures is financed by my job with US WEST Communicati ons in Elkhorn, NE (7 miles from Omaha) where I am a........... uh...... (What's my job title this WEEK?) .. oh yeah.... Network Technician. (That which you call a Installer/Repairman/Splicer would say as much, or more, but one of those words is sexist!) Following is a (not SOOOOO long [for me!]) TEXT file that I used elsewhere that explains WHY I missed the most important meeting of the YEAR (for me!). * * * * * Acts of God, Cable Failures and The "Spirit of Service" Tuesday, July 9, was an unprecedented day for me with the telephone company. I worked on a sizeable portion of our physical plant that had been badly damaged by a lightning strike. The damaged affected the equivalent of two city blocks as determined by the number of subscribers affected. I was the first to arrive on the scene of this "cable failure" at 1:30pm that afternoon, and got home at 11:30pm. Three, more experienced, Network Technicians (splicers) came to the rescue and, together, we repaired the fused and melted cable (50, 24-gauge copper pairs forming a loop) in eight, different closures. This is NOT aerial cable, but underground plant that comes above ground every two to three lots. In most cases, the pairs were most badly damaged right where they exit the outer cable sheath and armor. Four of the locations required excavation of the terminal in order to raise enough slack to open the cable sheath further down to gain access to good wire. These terminals must be replaced. In several locations, the locking bolt of the closure was blown out of its threads and at two places, the metal covers had been blown off the terminal - one to a distance of five feet! Two men from a contracting firm did most of the digging and they replaced a short section of the cable. The three other technicians left at 9:00pm after we had completed temporary repairs on the damage we found. Within a few minutes, I drove away from the site, only to be flagged down by a resident that told me their telephone service was NOT working. While I was speaking to this subscriber, yet another customer stepped out of their home to tell me of their non- working telephone! I opened five more cable closures further down the line and found still more lightning damage. More melted and fused cable pairs. With a call from me, two of the other technicians returned and we worked until after 11:00pm to complete repairs - all the way to the end of the line! Due to the obviously severe weather that had occurred the night before, there were an unusually high number of service outtages all over Douglas and Sarpy counties but they were mostly scattered, individual trouble reports. Cable failures are infrequent but, when they DO occur, they are usually caused by a backhoe or posthole digger. Lightning damage to buried cable is rare. A hundred years ago, the Bell System coined a phrase and concept called "The Spirit of Service". After eighteen years with the company, I am proud to say that, for most employees, that spirit is still alive. As always, the pay for such work is excellent, but there was certainly more to it than just money. After hours of sitting on or IN the ground, bathing in insect repellant, using a tiny "pair pick" to separate melted pairs, and finishing up by flashlight, The Spirit of Service became a greater driving force than the monetary reward. I humbly appologize to those at the Omaha Macintosh Users' Group meeting for chosing to break my commitment to give the evening's presentation on Communications. Overtime is NOT mandetory, so it was a VERY tough decision. OMUG meeting dates are the one day each month that I adamently reserve for ME. Ironically, the LAST service to be restored from the cable failure was that of OMUG member, Rick Dressler! I would be happy if I never had to repeat the experience. However you can use FSP to sort the file section anyway you want. There is a file section called ALLDL but it is almost 8 megs and I do not recommend it as it takes so long to wade through. I can create a master DL area for you on CD by alpha if you still want it however. All individual sections have always had an alpha and a date directory. So I assume you are only talking about the ALLDL area. Just let me know if you need a Master alpha on it as well and I'll sneak it in. This version will have a Hypercard stack that will search the entire CD directory and give paths, up to 10 lines of descriptions and more. I understand your thoughts however it takes me 4-10 times as long to archieve with Compactor as it does with DD and the double up board. The other fact is that users need not purchase DD and it is available on the CD for their use. I cannot please everyone on this issue and so will choose the format I can get the work done best with. I have had trouble with unstuffit delux and wish to move away from that format. It really has confused our users when they double click on such a file and it launches Stuffit 1.51 and does nothing. Usually they cause duplicates and have to be closely examined. Your users can upload in DD or Compactor and fit the mode of the CD. Conversion is sooo hairy on 8400 files not just because of the act itself, but because listings have to be changed about the type of compression used, paths have to change, and Telefinder description have to be re-written to each file. Reports Third Quarter Results CUPERTINO, California July 17, 1991 Apple Computer, Inc. reported today that in its third fiscal quarter unit shipments of its popular Macintosh personal computers grew by more than 60 percent, and that net revenues increased by 12 percent, compared to the third quarter a year ago. Apple also announced that it has taken a one time charge of $224.0 million, or $138.9 million after tax, for restructuring, cost reduction, and other activities that are now underway at the company. As a result of these charges, the company reported a net loss for the quarter of $53.1 million. "Apple's market share is growing as we continue to post significant increases in unit shipments and revenue," said John Sculley, chairman and chief executive officer. "Now, we are taking important steps to lower our costs because success in this industry in the future will depend on increasingly cost effective operations in addition to technological and market leadership. Our restructuring activities, and the costs associated with them, while difficult in the short run, will provide important competitive benefits as we move forward." Apple's net revenues for the quarter grew to $1.529 billion, compared with $1.365 billion in the year ago period. International revenues accounted for 44 percent of total revenues, compared with 42 percent during the third quarter of fiscal 1990. Gross margin for the quarter was 45.8 percent compared with 54.0 percent in the year ago period. The net loss per share for the quarter was $.44, including $1.16 per share for restructuring and other expenses. The company reported earnings per share of $.96 in the third quarter a year ago. "During the quarter we took a number of actions aimed at positioning Apple even more competitively for the future," Sculley continued. "We are reducing our operating expenses as a percentage of sales, and intend to do even more of this through our restructuring activities. We announced our intention to work together with IBM on important new technology initiatives in the areas of enterprise computing, AIX and A/UX development, object-oriented software platforms, RISC technology, and multimedia. And, throughout the quarter we continued to implement important changes in our distribution channels, including the authorization of high-volume superstores in the United States. I believe they have almost become a religion to some of us fanatics..<grin>. I like both and both will be on the CD. However, I must us DD on my files that require re-compression as #1). it cuts my work time way down with the double up board and #2). we are planning an uncompressed personal version in the future. With DD I can simply select the Files folder on a GIG+ <grin> drive and DD will decompress all of the files automatically. Compactor would require me to decompress them (9,000) one at a time which is just not reasonable for the conversion. The extractor for both the Disk Doubler init and the application will be on the CD. Further for any who want DD the <real program> I will arrange a group buy for $40.00. I hope to satisfy as many individuals as possible and still get the projects done. I hope all can understand this is only a part-time after work project for me. The MDP-1100, scheduled to ship in late August, was developed by Sony Multimedia Systems, a division of Sony Corporation of America's Business and Professional Group.
